I'm new to this forum, and just like for all of you guys, Beethoven's music means the world to me. Just as a short introduction of myself, I'm from Finland and I play the piano somewhat ok. I studied music in a special high school in Helsinki but after various other choices (and years), switched to study medicine.

So to return to my question, I am very interested in any anecdotes/stories about Beethoven and the months between the end of 1814 until the June of 1815 when the "dancing" Congress of Vienna took place. I understand from my sources that this was seen as a highpoint of Beethoven's career, as there was a vast amount of aristocrats all over Europe present in Vienna for the congress who also attended a major Beethoven concert, but I'm not sure of the place where the concert was held. I know that at least the 7th symphony and Wellington's victory were performed. Also, it has come to my knowledge that during that very same period of time Beethoven composed the Polonaise op 89 for the Russian tsarinna, and according to some, also performed that piece of music himself and that was (probably?) his last performance playing the piano. Of that concert/soirée I have very little information.

Why I am so interested in these particular happenings, is that my relative was there! His name was Frans David Alopaeus (later known as count von Alopaeus) and he was part of the Russian delegation. It's pretty overwhelming to even start to imagine that a tiny part of my DNA has been there to witness the maestro himself playing & concucting!! (:D

Do you happen to know for instance, what did Beethoven himself write about those concerts? If they were such a big deal, as a sort of breakthrough for him in the whole of Europe as is claimed, he must have commented them somehow.

In questo periodo Beethoven è già afflitto da un principio di idropisia; Johann accenna infatti al gonfiore dei piedi e dice che « il ventre gli si ingrossava sempre di più, e per parecchio tempo lo tenne fasciato con una benda ». Non ci è dato sapere quanto sia avanzata la sua malattia allorché infine lascia Gneixendorf con Karl, probabilmente il 1° di dicembre. Da principio non si trova un medico, poi finalmente Karl riesce a far venire un certo dottor Wawruch. A febbraio canta per lui "Adelaide" il tenore Cramolini; nelle sue memorie cita un Beethoven "molto dimagrito e stanco, ma con una fanciullesca voglia di rimettersi al lavoro". Inaspettatamente riceve 100 sterline dalla Società Filarmonica Londinese, tanto che si vede costretto a scrivere sulla "Musicalische Zeitung" del 27 febbraio una smentita sulle sue reali condizioni di salute: "Sono infermo, non esco che alla bisogna, ma la mia mente lavora; mi sembra di aver scritto che qualche nota, sino ad oggi". A marzo riceve in visita gli Hummel, e poi Hiller, riuscendo a fare una piccola passeggiata, a metà mese, come attestano i quaderni di conversazione del 14 marzo 1827, dialogo fra Beethoven, Schindler e Karl Holz, pagina 156 recto (G. Schünemann, ed.: Ludwig van Beethovens Konversationshefte, I-IIX (Berlin, 1941-3) [conversation books from Feb 1818 to Mars 1829]. Giunge il 26 marzo, una giornata molto fredda e piovosa. Un'altra interessante (anche se meno autorevole) versione di questa sinfonia ci è stata regalata da Gerd Prengel. Un buon ascolto, la musica mi è piaciuta, ma è più una sinfonia di Prengel che di Beethoven. Il tema del primo movimento è stato scelto arbitrariamente tra gli appunti e quasi certamente non è quello che avrebbe utilizzato Beethoven; inoltre, il secondo mvimento è diverso da quello che penso avrebbe usato il Maestro: è probabile che si sarebbe trattato di una sinfonia insolita dal punto di vista strutturale, con un andante all'inizio del 1° movimento e priva di un movimento lento nella sezione centrale. E' più probabile che i 2 movimenti centrali sarebbero stati costituiti da un minuetto e da uno scherzo, come spiega Cooper nella lezione in inglese che Benedetta ha messo ul forum. Prengel, invece, inserisce un secondo movimento lento. Lo scherzo mi sembra la cosa più verosimile nella versione di Prengel, anche se anche qui si è preso delle libertà non indifferenti.

Il compositore romeno Adrian Gagiu ha basato la propria 4^ sinfonia sui temi della Decima di Beethoven, integrandoli con frammenti dal già citato Quintetto WoO 62, anche se chiaramente si tratta di un lavoro che ha più del wagneriano che del beethoveniano.

ovvero il Breviario Beethoveniano di Carlo Alberto Pagni, che potete apprezzare partendo
dalla prima pagina del nostro sito, oppure da qua: [www.lvbeethoven.it]
Il figlio, il gentilissimo Marco, ha scritto una breve ed efficace introduzione al lavoro dello scomparso genitore.
Buona lettura; in effetti lo stile riassuntivo è perfettamente in linea con i principi cardine della bibliografia beethoveniana alla Poggi-Vallora, per intenderci. Un' altra roccia su cui fondare la nostra casa-castello.
PS: continuerò a sostituire molti MIDI con MP3, dedicandomi prima alle opere più famose, che sono rimaste troppo trascurate, (sinfonie, quartetti, concerti ecc...) e aggiungerò una dettagliata descrizione. Gli MP3 saranno di qualità sorprendente. (46 anni, da 13 sul sito con questi risultati: devo ACCELERARE!)
