My own initial reaction to the movement was purely formal, and I was (and am) in awe at its masterly handling of dimininished sevenths and other technical details.

Having read the Jander book above, I am staggered to learn of its possible "Orphic" connections, which also apply to the other movements. I would like to post more about this fascinating - and controversial - thesis by Jander, but would first ask if other forum members have some comments to make about the concerto.

Merci d'avance.
Cordialement,
Florence
P.S.
what I know about (2 replies)

During the period known as the middle years, he composed the second through eight symphonies. In particular, the third symphony, nicknamed Eroica, where his famous span of attention-grabbing uninterrupted music was first introduced to the world. This symphony was longer, more daring musically, and more powerful than any symphony previously written ever. The pastoral sixth symphony was also a beautiful piece of music. Also his only opera, Fidelio, was composed during this time. The famous Rasumovsky String Quartets were concocted during this time. These works are considered part of the most difficult music in the string quartet repertoire. The music from this time on was revolutionary, and not only in technique. Beethoven's expanded forms broadened the scope for emotional expression, giving voice to the revolutionary spirit of the age.

In his later years, his music becomes deep, rich and very dimensional. The fantastic ninth symphony brings closure to a flawless set of symphonies. No longer was there composing under previous bounds of the classical era, but rather he was composing with disregard for what had been thought the limitations of the performer or the liking of the audience. He was composing for himself and the ages. The final quartets which completed the sixteen phenomenal entourage of chamber music along with the 32 piano sonatas gave us a glimpse of Beethoven's true composition brilliance. In particular, he spent all of 1818 composing the Hammerklavier Sonata which was nearly an hour long. It was depicted as a gargantuan piece from a titan among composers. His ability to build large-scale musical structures that lasted for hours was among the rarest gifts that the world has ever seen.

Similarity of the themes in op. 80, op. 125 and WoO 118 (5 replies)

Hello everybody,

my name is Simon and eventhough this account maybe new, I've been a regular visitor of www.lvbeethoven.com for quite some time now, so I'd like to start by congratulating the creators of this website for the great source of information and pictures on Beethoven that they have created.
Now to my question (which has also been on my mind for quite some time):
It is commonly known that the Freudenthema of the 9th Symphony is anticipated in the main theme of the Chorphantasie in C minor, op. 80. Recently, however, I've been listening to "Seufzer eines Ungeliebten" & "Gegenliebe" WoO 118 and I couldn't help but to think that the theme starting after the words "Wüsst ich, wüsst ich, wüsst ich, wüsst ich, dass du mich lieb und wert ein bischen hieltest...." is almost the same as the main theme in op. 80.
I'm not a professional musician, so I'm not able to verify this assumption by checking the scores of the two pieces but I hope that someone here in this forum has noticed it before or is able to check it, or knows anything else concerning this topic (for example about the history of WoO 118).
I know that this question is very specific, but this forum is the only place I was able to think of where I might have a chance of getting an answer.
So thank you very much in andvance and

kind regards

Simon

In a Music Park, or even in our garden. :-)

What is considered the best/greatest of the Beethoven memorials or is just a matter of personal taste?

I would be very intrigued to know what various highly regarded musicologists of past and present have thought of them. Could anyone recommend websites or books that discuss this subject matter in detail? Thanks in advance!

I watched a movie tonight and heard in the background Beethovens 7th symphony, 2nd movement - with a choir singing "sangus solemnius" or something like it. Is their a version with choir? Or has Beethoven used the same tones in a choir-work?
Wondering, Lutz

The violin concerto (1 reply)

Hey, it's been a while since I've been on here!

I was hearing Beethoven's violin concerto again the other night, and it got me thinking. Is there any violin concerto prior to it that even comes close? One might argue that Mozart's best piano concerto's are predecessors of Beethoven's in their expressiveness and drama, but I can't think of anything like the Beethoven violin concerto that predates it-- the slow movement is as good as just about any slow movement of the symphonies! (Possibly excepting his ninth.)

Really, how did he do it? What made him think, "Ya know, I'm going to write this incredibly beautiful and profound violin concerto!!" lol.

-john

I'm doing a research about the violinist Ignaz Schuppanzigh (1776 - 1830) and I discovered that Beethoven wrote some musical scherzos for him.
