As I said above, don't like cats (lazy, selfish creatures, no good meat on 'em). Dogs are a different matter entirely. I was in China a couple of years back and I did try that delicacy. Lovely, it was. Sorry if I shock anybody, but meat is meat. I mean, if you can eat beef why not other animals?
By the way, did Beethoven keep a pet? Was that a common practice in his day? You see how I can keep everything related to Beethoven? And you see how I avoided the term "pussy"? I think Beethoven liked that. Cats, I mean. Though it's not mentioned in the conversation books.

I don't recall in any of the books that I've read so far about Ludwig that he had any affection for any animals. I don't care for household pets. They make the place smelly and dirty. Animals are fine - as long as they're not in my place of residence.

I had read somewhere that he did have a wandering cat. But then again, in those days cats were all over keeping the mouse and rat population down.

Oh yes! I love all animals, but believe it or not, especially rats (domestic). They are very very intelligent. My son had one, and he would never leave you, even with the door open. Smart, smart, smart. He got out of his cage one night, and my son awoke to find him sleeping right beside him. We eventually had to have him put down because of a tumor. It was a very sad day for my son, "Radar" was a good friend.

We now have a cat, and he has got the biggest personality. Dogs just do as they are told (boring). My friend has three large dogs, that make a mess, and you have to take them for a walk and pick up the poop. Yuk!

I'm sure the maestro had lots of little friends for pets, like, rats, mice, and bed bugs! hahha Maybe the cat left in disgust.

You're right Ann, Beethoven loved fish, as you would do if you lived next to the Rhine river (flowing next to Bonn). Still, he is known to have loved a nice bit of roast veal, as I do !!
I'm still hoping to have my first real 'Wiener Schnitzel' when I visit Vienna for the first time. This has been a "project" of mine for some years now; I have of course eaten a Wiener Schitzel elsewhere, but I absolutely have to have one in Vienna, for obvious reasons !!
Tonight we have friends round. On the menu : home-made vegetable terrine with cold curry sauce (served with a French Touraine, a dry white wine from the sauvignon grape variety), followed by (yes, again !) Beef Wellington, served with a crisp mâche salad and walnuts, plus obligatory red Médoc.
No cheese (unless my guests insist), but for desert a violet and lemon "büche glacée".
