Night owls

Night owls

Well, it seems that there are cetainly night owls on this forum, so to save us all zapping from thread to thread before going to bed, why not have a sort of "night owl" thread were we could have a sort of last (light hearted) chat on anything LvB-related? Just an idea, ...
Re: Night owls

No takers? No problem, I'm off to bed (with which piece of LvB buzzing through my head? Ah, I would have told you, but tomorrow night, perhaps!).
Re: Night owls
June 28, 2007 04:38AM
great idea of a thread hehehe. :-) I'm not really a night owl. ;-)
Re: Night owls

I'm a night owl since I've was a baby boy! I enjoy night and everything that night brings with itself! But, I belive that we all live in different time zones, so night isn't night at the same time for one user of the forum like for the other smiling smiley Still, that's not a problem I think winking smiley

Not only some of us are night owls, but there is a time difference between us as well: for me and Eroica it is an hour earlier than for Philip and Franliszt I guess.... sad smiley

Daer Angel, franliszt and JB:
You're all quite right! Please forgive my eurocentrism! If we try the "night owl" I do suggest we keep it light, and reserve the other threads for more in-depth comments. What do you think? And what about trying to clean up the pages, archiving "dormant" threads? Who would we need to contact about that?
Re: Night owls
June 28, 2007 02:45PM
i agree with you Philip: some cleaning up seems useful to me, as well as some kind or archiving the serious contributions of threads which seem to be gone "out of favour".
The lighter side I definitely do appreciate as well smiling smiley

Beethoven is an important subject to discuss, but as he got we have our humour and humorous moments as well (I hope ;-) )

OK JB, so we here are. A rather boring and late lunch for me, I'm afraid : baguette (a bit stale) and some compté (a little like cheddar) and a glass of Côtes de Tricastain (cheap and cheerful, but really OK). What's that famous saying : wine, women and music (song) ? Is that right? Anyway, couldn't agree more. And I don't want to suggest for one second that women are consummables comparable to "products" like wine and music, though somehow I never "equate" music as a "product", though of course it is a product of our minds. Or ...?

Oh dear, I hope this thread doesn't become a monologue! I've been sitting here for over half a hour and no one has come back in "real time", so to speak. Then again, here in Europe it's only 15h.27, so for Angel et al it may well be another time zone.

So, Angel : you're not a night owl (a clue as to your time zone?)
Franliszt : So you've been a nightowl since you were a baby. Are you a vampire?
JB : So you and Eroica are probably UK-based? Nobody's perfect, old boy! PS Goodbye Blair, hello Brown! Hmm, VERY off-forum !!

So, I'm signing off until later. See you on the forum later perhaps.

Are you living in or near Alsace or Lorraine then?

Wein Weib und Gesang is defintiely right, but we don't have to listen to this Strauss-walzer for that experience: "Music, Love and Wine " (opus 108/1) is a very similar experience... as is "Come fill, fill my good fellow" (108/13).

PS Goodbye Blair, hello Brown! Hmm, VERY off-forum !!

Very, very off-forum I'm afraid. But as Blair hasn't got a clue what classical musice is about (he only played electrical guitar and managed to grasp some three chords or so) and thinks it's something for over 50s (no offence to anyone, as I belong to that group as well I am sorry to say... ;-) ), things in that respect can only go better.

Ofcourse we could send him a copy of Bonny Laddie, Highland Laddie (op.108/7)...., or perhaps more applicable to his heritage "The soldier in a foreign land" (WoO 154/11)

Sorry, very off-forum, but I couldn't resist this one :-)

Only on holidays winking smiley By the way you don't have to apologize to me for being eurocentric, I'm from Croatia and I'm one as well smiling smiley

Night fills with inspiration, it has nothing to do with vampirism or Blade, or Resident Evil and stuff smiling smiley

So gentlemen, and ladies, regardless of time zones and distances, another piece of Straussian advice: "Freut euch des Lebens weil noch das Lämpchen glüht" Op.340, and most seasonal:"Frühlingsstimmen", Op.410, and I suppose one could also throw in "Rosen aus dem Süden", Op.388. These are all things one can enjoy any time of day or night. As for Mr Blair, he would probably qualify for "Morgenblätter", Op.279. And to return to the Master, I believe one could cite for Mr Brown: "Die Weihe des Hauses", Op.124 (a very "classically" conceived overture.) - After which, perhaps "Bahnfrei".

For Mr Brown it is more 4 Ernste Gesänge/Serious Songs op.121 by Brahms ..... (as Son of a Scottish presbyterian minister)

This IS a grand idea--now I know what I can fiddle away with when I have trouble sleeping....:-)

Dear Philip - It's ok my friend, I understand. At least we all have a good sense of humor hehe.. I live in the US California. :-)
Re: Night owls

JB and Frits : Excellent references re Blair / Brown. I had thought of "Les Adieux" but it doesn't quite hold up.
JB : Yes, Strasbourg in fact.
PIR : Hold that fiddle, Nero! And put down those matches this instance! (LOL) [See, I'm learning!]
Angel : No disgusting things such as brain soup in California, I imagine! Very briefly, I was in China two years ago, and I tell you, there, one can be offered almost ANYTHING to eat. I don't dare tell you what I tried (and found OK).

Please ladies and gentlemen, what is a "sticky"?
A article of interest perhaps from today's Guardian (on guardian.co.uk/music/classical) re The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and HIP. JB et al ?

What is a "sticky"?

A sticky is -in 1960s jargon- a cigaret not only containing tobacco, but some kind of drug, most to the time cannabis, as well.

A "sticky point" however is a subject which needs to be treated carefully and respectfully, as there are many threads connected to it which can trigger adverse, unexpected, perhaps politically incorrect reactions, difficult to defuse, and a source of misunderstandings.
